Photography

In Fall 2017, I took a digital photography class that changed my life. After learning various techniques, I applied this new knowledge wherever I went after that, including Turkey, Zanzibar and Malaysia.

One of the most interesting things I remember from that class was a presentation given by a fellow student where they quoted the great photographer, Sebastiao Salgado, who once said, “It’s more important for a photographer to have very good shoes, than to have a very good camera.” This quote stuck with me, highlighting the role of photographer as a visual storyteller and adventurer. What I also learned is that we can’t wait for adventure to happen for us, we need to create our own stories and explore the word we are a part of. The most fascinating thing I discovered through photography is how it helped me feel mindful, grateful, and centered, because it forced me to focus on the beauty in the world around me, whether this beauty was in my neighborhood in the suburbs outside of Washington, DC at the time or in Kuala Lumpur on the other side of the globe where I was sent for work.

The gallery below includes a few samples of my work from different locations I’ve visited. Each image has a story.
